What is a letter of invitation?

Are your friends or relatives planning to visit Canada from another country?

If so, they will likely require a visitor’s visa. Additionally, they may be asked to provide a notarized letter of invitation from the person they will be staying with while they are here.

Red Seal Notary can draft your letter of invitation for you and notarize it.

According to Citizenship & Immigration Canada, some of the things your letter must include are:

  • the name of the person you are inviting
  • their date of birth
  • their address and telephone number
  • your name, date of birth, address and telephone number
  • your occupation and citizenship status
  • your relationship to the person being invited
  • the purpose of their trip
  • how long the invitee intends to stay in Canada
  • the date they will be leaving
  • and more

Once your letter has been prepared and notarized, you must send it to the person you are inviting. Your friend or relative will then submit your letter, along with their visa application, to the Canadian embassy or consulate in their country.

It is important to note that letters of invitation do not guarantee the issuance of a visa, as it is up to the visa officer to determine whether or not your friend or relative meets the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
