Certified True Copy

Where Trust Meets Certification

What is a notarized copy?

There are many instances where you’ll need to provide a certified true copy of an important document.

A certified true copy or a notarized copy is a genuine reproduction of an original document that is notarized and sealed by a notary public without certifying the original document’s legality or authenticity.

At Red Seal Notary, we’ll certify a copy of your original document as being a true copy of the original by affixing a signature, seal, and statement to that effect on the copy itself. This allows you to safely submit a copy rather than the original document, while also satisfying the requirements of the person or organization receiving the document.

When is a Certified True Copy Required?

Certified copies are commonly required with academic, employment, and government applications, such as:

  • Applying for an international visa
  • Sending degrees and academic transcripts to foreign universities
  • Providing vocational documents to employers
  • Applying to work or study in another country
  • Verifying your identity and qualifications to regulatory bodies
  • Meeting ongoing reporting requirements, such as on Personal Information Forms
  • Proving your place of residence
  • Applying for professional or trade licenses, or post-secondary programs in Canada or abroad

For documents to be used abroad, the certified true copy may also need to be ‘Apostilled’, or ‘Legalized’ by a Consulate or Embassy. Visit our Apostille page for more information.
