Are you ready for your destination wedding?
May 2, 2013

Congratulations! You’re getting married – and even better, you’re exchanging your vows in a tropical paradise.
What could be more romantic?
There you stand on a tranquil beach. The dazzling sun caresses your shoulders as you gaze into each other’s eyes with friends and family looking on. Your dream wedding is about to begin.
Or is it?
Did you do your homework? Was your paperwork in order before you arrived at your destination?
As exciting as it may seem, getting married abroad is usually not as simple as selecting a dress, renting a tux, sending out invitations, and booking a vacation package. To ensure your overseas wedding goes off without a hitch, you will need to obtain a number of documents before you leave Canada.
Although every country has different requirements, in most situations you will need a valid passport, a Single Status Declaration, notarized copies of your birth certificate, and if you are widowed or have been previously married, you will need notarized copies of your divorce and/or death certificates, as well.
Additionally, foreign authorities will likely ask that an apostille be attached to your documents. In Canada the process of notarization + authentication + legalization is equivalent to an apostille. It is extremely important that you contact the embassy or consulate of the country where you will be wed to ensure you meet their specific requirements.
For more information on authentication and legalization, please see our article “What is an apostille and when do you need one?”
