Mom and Dad Aren’t Going on Spring Break with Me – What Should I Do?

March Break is rapidly approaching, and if you’re a typical teen, you’re likely getting ready to ditch the books and fly south for some fun in the sun.
You and your BFFs can’t wait to shed your winter coats, along with your inhibitions, for a joyful week of parent-free pleasure.
But before the frivolity begins, you’ll have to get to your destination hassle free.
Imagine how heartbroken you’d be if you were turned away at the airline’s check-in counter because you didn’t have the proper documentation.
So, what do you need to bring, besides sunscreen and a bikini?
- If you’re leaving the country, you must have a valid passport.
- If you’re travelling without your parents or legal guardians, you should have a notarized consent-to-travel letter signed by both of them. If you don’t have a permission letter from your parents, the airline may refuse to let you board the plane, or you could be held at the border when trying to leave the country you were visiting.
- Depending on the airline, you may also require your birth certificate, showing the name(s) of your parent(s), and any legal documents pertaining to custody. You may also be asked to present a death certificate if your parent(s) are deceased and your consent letter has been signed by your legal guardians.
To avoid frustration, panic and disappointment, we recommend you contact the airline to confirm its rules for minors travelling alone. It also wouldn’t hurt to contact the embassy or consulate of the country you’ll be visiting to determine its specific entry and exit requirements.
