What are notarized translations?
June 11, 2013

Notarized translations are sometimes required when you have been asked to submit Canadian documents to foreign jurisdictions.
Unfortunately, this often leads to confusion, as a notarization can signify a number of different things.
When a notary public notarizes a document, it can mean one of the following:
- Either the notary has personally witnessed someone sign a document; or
- The notary has made a photocopy of an original document and certified that the photocopy is a true copy of the original.
However, with regard to translated documents, the requesting party may ask that your document be notarized to confirm that the translation provided by the translator is legitimate. In this case, the notarization must be obtained directly from the office of the translator.
When a third party asks you to have a translated document notarized, it is vital to obtain more information from the requesting party, as well as from the person you hire to translate your document. (It is important to note that not all translators provide notarized translations.)
Before contacting Red Seal Notary, you will need to understand exactly what type of notarization the requesting party is referring to.
Here are some questions you could ask:
- Do I need a notary to witness my signature on my document?
- Do I need a notary to provide a certified true copy of my original document?
- Do I need a translator to certify that their translation of my document is legitimate?
Red Seal Notary does not provide notarized translations on their own, but we do provide notarized translations as part of our Authentication and Legalization packages.
