Please note these online checks cannot be used for the vulnerable sector, which must be initiated by your local police service.
Security questions are based on your credit file, so if you do not have a credit history in Canada you may have to order an extra form to have your identity verified at a Canada Post office.
For those that cannot use an online CPIC check, we still offer this service in-person at our RCMP accredited locations. Details of the in-person service are below.
** Please Note: In-person service is only available at limited RCMP approved locations. Please note that background checks based on name and date of birth are not necessarily conclusive. For a more thorough criminal background check, you may wish to utilize our fingerprinting services.
If you require a vulnerable sector check, (i.e. you will be working with children or the elderly, etc.) please note that you MUST start your application at your local Police Services office. Accredited private fingerprinting agencies are NOT authorized to initiate the vulnerable sector check process.
It is becoming increasingly common for employers to require criminal background checks from potential candidates. While usually they require checks based on fingerprints, which are more conclusive and reliable, some will still accept background checks based on name and date of birth. Red Seal Notary offers these Criminal Name Index Checks (CNIC) for those that need them. This service is only available at locations accredited to perform fingerprinting services.
The Criminal Name Index Check is conducted by comparing the individual’s name and date of birth to information contained in the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) Identification Data Bank. If there is no match then the result will indicate no match. If however there is a potential match, then the only way to confirm whether an individual has a criminal record is by the submission of fingerprints. i.e. you will receive a result of no match, or inconclusive. If you have a common name, for example, you may wish to save time and money by submitting fingerprints for a conclusive check from the start. For more information on Red Seal Notary’s fingerprinting service, please see our Fingerprinting page.
